Second Annual Tartu Conference on Russian and East European Studies

We are pleased to invite you to the Second Annual Tartu Conference on Russian and East European Studies, to be held on 4-6 June 2017 in Tartu. The conference theme this year is “The Russian Revolution and Its Legacies: Taking Stock a Century Later”.

Following the general standard of an academic conference, the programme will consist of plenary sessions with invited speakers as well as panel sessions with presentations by researchers with diverse backgrounds. Please see the full programme of the conference here.

The conference will open on June 4 with a keynote address by Ronald Grigor Suny (University of Michigan) who will speak about Lessons of October:  The Fate of Democracy and Socialism in the Age of Revolution and Counter-Revolution. A plenary roundtable Soviet Legacies and De-Sovietization in Russia and Eastern Europe will be held in the afternoon on Monday, 5 June and will feature Mark Kramer (Harvard University), Richard Sakwa (University of Kent), Madina Tlostanova (Linköping University) and Lauri Mälksoo (University of Tartu).

The keynote speech will be held on June 4 at the Ring Auditorium of Jakobi 2 building and is open to the public with no prior registration. To participate in other events of the conference, guests are kindly asked to register beforehand on the conference website. Registration is ongoing until full capacity is reached.

The Tartu Conference is organized jointly by the Centre for EU-Russia Studies at the University of Tartu, the Global Europe Centre at the University of Kent, and the Uppsala Centre for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Uppsala University under a Horizon 2020 Twinning project entitled “Building Research Excellence in Russian and East European Studies at the Universities of Tartu, Uppsala and Kent” (UPTAKE).
