  • Jacqueline Dufalla
    1 September 2020 – 30 June 2021
    Jacqueline is currently a PhD candidate at the Central European University in the Doctoral School for Political Science, Public Policy, and International Relations in the International Relations Track. In Tartu, she is working on her dissertation, entitled ‘Re-conceptualizing a Global Challenger: Russia’s Role in the International Order’, which focuses on how to define a global challenger by doing historical analysis to form a conceptual framework and then applying it to contemporary Russia. Her local supervisor is Professor Viacheslav Morozov.
  • Olena Podolian

    Olena is a PhD student from Södertörn University in Stockholm, Sweden where she is writing her thesis on ‘The challenge of ‘stateness’ in post-Soviet democratisation: Reevaluation and implications for democracy in Estonia and Ukraine, 1991-present day.’ While in tartu she will conduct further research nd consult with the experts at the institute of Government and Politics, in particular Professor Vello Pettai..
  • Arevik Anapiosyan

    Arevnik is a PhD student from the Yerevan State University Centre for European Studies were she is working as a research expert and working on a doctoral dissertation on conflict resolution, comparing the Kosovo and Nagorno-Karabakh cases in their search of self-determination. While in Tartu she will closely work with Professor Eiki Berg to complete her dissertation project.
  • Sezer Özcan
    15 January – 30 March 2014
    Sezer is a PhD student from the University of Bielefeld, Germany. During his stay in Tartu as a DoRa5 funded visiting doctoral researcher he will be working on his project about the process of energy securitization in the European Union, an ‘Analysis of the European Discourses to the Energy Crises from the 1973 Oil Crisis until the 2009 Natural Gas Crisis.’ While with CEURUS his project will  be supervised by Andrey Belyi.
  • Aliaksei Kazharski
    20 August – 30 September 2013
    Aliaksei is a visiting doctoral student funded by the DoRa5 program. Belarusian by nationality, Aliaksei is currently affiliated with the Institute of European Studies and International Relations, Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia, where he is doing his PhD and is also giving lectures on Russian politics. The project he is currently working on examines the institutionalization of Eurasian regionalism and its relations with the European Union. The project is supervised by Andrey Makarychev.
  • Kinga Iwona Dudzińska
    August- September 2013
    Kinga is an analyst at the Polish Institute of International Affairs in the Eastern and South Eastern Europe Programme, where the main areas of her interests include foreign and domestic policies of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia and cooperation between the Baltic states. She analyzes the energy security in the BSR and energy policies of the Baltic states, as well as security issues in general (Baltic states in the EU, and BS – Russia relations). Other areas of interest include national minorities, political participation and electoral behaviour in the Baltic States, as well as social cleavages in the region (in comparative perspective). She is working on her PhD entitled “Determinants of political participation of women in the Baltic states – a comparative analysis.” While in Tartu, her main focus will be on economic crisis management in the Baltic countries, its consequences and its impact on political and social change. The project is supervised by Andres Kasekamp.

    Jane is a graduate student at Harvard University, where she is a graduate student affiliate at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies. She previously served as a Junior Fellow for the Russia-Eurasia program at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington, D.C., where she researched politics and economies of the FSU. Jane’s research interests include nation-building/state-building, collective memory, conflict resolution, separatism, religion and society, political psychology, social networks, politics of citizenship, and civil society. Her current research project studies the conceptualization and institutionalization of collective historical memories in a comparative context, by focusing on the case studies of Estonia and Georgia.
  • Andrey Medvedev

    Andrey is a PhD candidate at the Institute of State and Law of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). While at CEURUS Andrey was pursued his research topic about The Evolution of Corporate Doctrine in English Law focusing on legislation and judicial practice in England and the United States mainly in the 18th-20th centuries. Previously, Andrey was engaged with research at the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) in Rome (Italy) and at the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL); he also participates in the work of governmental institutions of the Russian Federation, in particular, the Higher Arbitrazh (State Commercial) Court of the Russian Federation. His research visit was supported by a DoRa grant and sponsored by Professor William Simons at the UT Institute of Law.

  • Maren Hofius

    PhD candidate at the University of Hamburg (Germany). Her PhD project is entitled Making sense of the EUropean ‘community of values’ at the EU’s borders. This is a practice theory inspired study of the ways in which the EU’s collectivity may be created and maintained in practice. It follows a reflexive and practice-based approach that highlights how ‘community’ can be established and works as an empirical reality. For this purpose, the project specifically deals with the micro-processes of community which are not concerned with questions of the possibility of community, but with concrete instances of its formation, that is questions as to how communities are constituted and how individuals make sense of them. Maren holds a joint MA degree in Contemporary European Studies from the University of Bath and the Humboldt University of Berlin. She was awarded a visiting PhD research grant by the DoRa programme, sponsored by CEURUS affiliated scholar Prof Viacheslav Morozov.
  • Evgeniya Bakalova
    17. September – 30 November 2012
    PhD candidate at the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (Germany). She is researching on “Russia-EU Rivalry in the Quest for Influence” discussing contested universalism of European values in Russia’s foreign policy discourse and the tensions created in Russia-EU relations as a result of the advance of “Normative Power Europe” in the shared neighborhood. She has an MA degree in European Studies from Flensburg University (Germany) and a diploma in International Relations from Ivanovo State University (Russia). Evgenyia was awarded a visiting PhD research grant by the DoRa programme, sponsored by CEURUS affiliated scholar Prof Viacheslav Morozov.
  • Vasile Rotaru
    1 March – 1 July 2012
    Vasie is a PhD candidate at the National School for Political Studies and Public Administration from Bucharest. The topic of his research is the impact of the Eastern Partnership on the EU-Russia relations. Vasile has a degree in journalism and a master’s degree in history.  He spent one semester as a research student at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. He was awarded a visiting PhD research grant by the DoRa programme to conduct reasearch at the Centre for EU-Rusia Studies, University of Tartu.
