Second International Winter School

“Transformation of Modern Statehood: Sovereignty, Memory, Identity”

The Centre for EU-Russia Studies (CEURUS) at the University of Tartu and the Department of Applied Political Science at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow invite Estonian and foreign students to participate in the Second International Winter School “Transformation of Modern Statehood: Sovereignty, Memory, Identity” to be held in Tartu, Estonia, on 11-17 February 2012.

The process of globalization entails a complex transformation of modern statehood, including an erosion of national sovereignty, the revision of democratic institutions, discussions on history, memory and identity, and the broadening of the concept of security. Responding to new political challenges, the states have to balance between nationalistic sentiments and cosmopolitan values. What are the principles of the emerging international order? Which factors will shape politics in the 21st century? These questions will be discussed at the School with the prominent Estonian and Russian political scientists.

School teaching team:

Eiki Berg, Professor of International Relations, University of Tartu
Piret Ehin, Senior Researcher and Executive Director of CEURUS, University of Tartu
