Junior scholars met at UPTAKE training school in Estonia
On 20-27 August, young scholars from all over Europe met at the Second UPTAKE training school “Scrutinizing the Story of Good and Bad Institutions: Post-Communism and Beyond” at the University of Tartu, Estonia.
The main aim of the training school was to offer an opportunity for junior scholars to present their research and receive feedback from their peers as well as senior academics working mostly in the field of Russian and East European Studies.
The summer school hosted altogether 17 PhD students and researchers from a variety of universities in Estonia, Czechia, the UK, and Ukraine. The academic programme of the training school consisted of in-depth discussions of submitted research papers and specialist lectures and roundtables by, for example, Professor Emeritus Rein Taagepera (Tartu/ UC Irvine), Prof Stefan Hedlund (Uppsala), Prof Leonid Polishchuk (Uppsala), and Dr Allan Sikk (UCL SSEES).
The programme also included several visits and study trips, such as a visit to Narva, the third largest city in Estonia located on the country’s border with Russia, and a site visit to the venue of Estonia’s EU Presidency meetings (Kultuurikatel) at Tallinn, as well as to the Estonian Parliament and the State Electoral Office.
Altogether four training schools are organised for PhD students and post-doctoral researchers working on the theme of Eastern Europe and Russian studies in the framework of the UPTAKE project. UPTAKE is funded from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 691818. The next training school will take place at the University of Kent, Brussels School of International Studies in January 2018.
