Dr. Olaf Mertelsmann

 

Olaf Mertelsmann is Associate Professor in Contemporary History at the Institute of History and Archeology. He holds a doctorate in history from the University of Hamburg (2000). He has taught in Estonia, Germany and Russia. His main interests are social and economic history of Eastern Europe, Stalinism, Soviet history and contemporary Baltic history. He is author of two monographs, edited five volumes and has published more than fifty papers in journals and edited volumes. He is principal investigator in the projects “Baltic Regionalism: Constructing Political Space(s) in Northern Europe, 1800-2000” and “Estonia in the Era of the Cold War.” Currently he is working on post-war Stalinism and on the Cold War in the Baltic Sea region.
